Northern Association of Teachers of English to
Speakers of Other Languages

About NATESOL
NATESOL is an organisation for teachers in the northwest of England who work in English Language Teaching. Members come from a variety of different backgrounds and work across all the phases of education from nursery through to higher education.

Sessions are held on weekday evenings or on Saturday morning. Details of times and venues are posted to all teachers on our database in advance of each session.

Sessions are organised by a committee of volunteers who meet regularly. Members of the organisation are encouraged to join the committee; you can never have too many people to help out. There is an Annual General Meeting which this year (2005) will be held on 7th December.

Membership
Membership runs for one academic year (September to July). This includes attendance at all 6 of the NATESOL sessions. Individual membership is £9 per annum; Institutional membership is £40 per annum. Institutional membership provides for up to 5 members of staff to attend each NATESOL session. Non-members pay £3 per session; students and concessions pay £2.

Sheila Anthony: A role for citizenship in the language classroom

Tuesday 18th. March 2008

6.30 (Registration & Refreshments) — 8.30 pm

Venue: University of Manchester, Ellen Wilkinson Building (formely Humanities), Oxford Road
(Opposite Holy Name Church, behind Manchester Academy) Room B4.3

The languages classroom would seem to be a natural starting point for exploring issues of citizenship and the global dimension. The session will provide some background information and then move on to consider possible ways of incorporating these elements into the teaching of languages.  Examples will be given from modern foreign languages and the advantages to be gained in terms of curriculum content and in terms of helping young people to prepare to take their place in society will be examined. In addition there will be recommendations about useful resources and opportunities to engage in activities and discussion with other participants in the session.

Sheila Anthony has recently retired from her post as Senior Lecturer in Initial Teacher Training (Modern Foreign Languages) at Manchester Metropolitan University MMU).  Previous to this she had many years experience teaching French and German at secondary level in Bradford, West Yorkshire, where many of her pupils spoke English as a second or additional language.  She is at present engaged in some research with Dr. Gee Macrory of MMU, looking at the ways in which PGCE trainee teachers have tried to include citizenship in their teaching.
