 Aims:

This course unit has been designed as a core course unit for the M Ed in educational psychology. It aims to develop knowledge of learning, teaching and classroom processes through clarification of the psychological considerations involved.

 Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this unit successful students will be able to critically discuss  and evaluate recent theory, research and practice on the following:

 ·         the impact of behavioural, cognitive and social psychology on successful teaching and learning;

·         the relationship between self esteem and learning;

·         Personal Construct Psychology and its relation to classroom practice;

·         enhancing motivation in the classroom;

·         the relationship between personality, intelligence and learning;

 Key Skills

Written communication:- assignment

Oral communication:-making informal contributions to discussion and debate

Working with others:- informally working in groups, actively listening to others

Problem solving:- identifying key issues

IT skills:- literature and library searches, word processing

 Content:

 Topics include: behavioural cognitive and social perspectives on learning and teaching; motivation; self-esteem; co-operative group learning; memory and meta cognition; personal construct psychology; intelligence and personality. Throughout, the course evaluates current research evidence in the context of particular topics and considers what practical inferences can be drawn from that evidence.

 Teaching and learning methods:

Teaching will be conducted in seminar format with active student participation being encouraged at all times.
