Counselling Courses - MA in Counselling

The MA provides an opportunity for counsellors to carry out a piece of supervised research into a specific area of theory or practice, in the form of a dissertation of between 12,000 and 20,000 words. The course includes input on research methods, and group and individual tutorials. The course aims to develop counsellors’ skills, competence and confidence in carrying out practitioner-based research in an area relevant to their practice or interests. The next intake will be in September 2004.

Content: Counselling theory applied to practice. A broad range of counselling theories are critically examined and their implications for counselling practice in different settings are explored. The movement towards the integration of theories and ways in which integration is being achieved. Research methods as a form of practice based enquiry facilitating the development of the reflective practitioner.

Key Aims & Objectives: To encourage the development of research in relation to practice and to strengthen the academic ease of counsellors who are also involved in the training of others.

Structure: Modular. Each course unit is normally 10 weeks, 3 hourly sessions. 5 course units will normally be required in addition to substantial previous training in Counselling (see Entry requirements). A research dissertation forms a significant part of the course.

Registration date: January annually

Duration: 12 months part-time, plus a period of supervised study for the research dissertation.

Participants: Professionally trained counsellors.

Entry Requirements: A first degree or equivalent professional qualification. In some cases, professional qualifications and life experience may stand in place of a first degree.

Teaching Staff: Peter Jenkins & Dr. William West.

Teaching Methods: A mixture of didactive and participative methods.

Forms of Assessment: An essay of 5,000 words for each course unit, plus a research dissertation of between 12-15,000 words.

Course Fee: 2003/2004 £1090, for MA year (For Diploma, leading up to MA approximately £1755.00, per year for two years)
