Counselling Courses - Postgraduate Diploma in Couselling

The Postgraduate Diploma is a two year part-time qualifying course in counselling, validated by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (www.bacp.co.uk). The course takes place on Wednesdays from 11.00am to 6.30pm , with three residential weekends over the two years. The course is based on an integrative approach to counselling, using the Egan model, and exploring the contribution of other perspectives, such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Person-Centred, Gestalt, and Psychodynamic approaches.

Course content:

The course includes:

  • Lectures, seminars and group discussion on the theory and practice of counselling, and related professional issues, eg codes of ethics
  • 175 hours of one to one counselling practice in a recognised placement, eg school, hospital, etc
  • 30 hours of supervision with a counselling supervisor
  • skills practice using role play, audio and video taped interactions with other students or clients from placement
  • participation in weekly personal development groups led by a course facilitator
  • experience during the course of individual personal therapy

Entry requirements:

Entry requirements are a first degree or relevant professional qualification, plus appropriate skills, attitudes, experience, and training, for example completion of a Certificate in Counselling Skills or equivalent.

Progression:

The course normally leads on to the MA in Counselling Studies as its third year, which requires completion of a dissertation on a topic related to counselling (see flowchart, a pdf file, for progression and pathways to counselling qualifications).

Next intake:

The next intake for the Postgraduate Diploma will be in September 2004. Course fees for the Diploma were £1650 per year for 2002/3, not including the cost of personal therapy, or one-to-one supervision.
