Content: Current information and practice
concerning individuals with severe and profound learning difficulties,
multi sensory impairment and complex needs. Issues and strategies to enable
people who are sensory impaired with profound learning disabilities to
share the same rights, needs and choices as other people. Methods of communication
(including alternative and augmentative systems). Effects of sensory loss
and dysfunction. Management of challenging behaviour. Developing an awareness
of Social Role Valorisation and Values & Attitudes. Needs, priorities
and issues relating to education, from infancy through to adulthood, including
looking at Lifetime Learning for this group of people. The role of the
family/primary carer is explored. Development of skills to enable effective
advocacy and inter-disciplinary working are addressed as part of the course.
More focussed subjects such as epilepsy, relationships and leisure may
also be chosen as study options in students' second year.
Key Aims & Objectives: To provide
a unique opportunity for a wide range of people to acquire knowledge and
skills which will empower them to enable individuals with very complex
needs to reach their full potential. To help families, primary carers
and those working to support these people with profound and multiple impairments
towards an improved quality of life and community presence.
Structure: The programme has a modular
structure delivered by distance learning. This is supported by a telephone
tutorial system and two workshops per year associated with the subjects
studied and current issues. Each course unit has a linked assignment.
All students are allocated a personal tutor to guide them through their
period of study.
Registration date: September annually
Duration: 2 years part-time
Participants: People who personally
or professionally come into contact with individuals with complex learning
needs and sensory impairments, or who have a desire to gain the specialised
knowledge related to this area of interest.
Entry Requirements: No formal requirements
are set in the entry regulations. However, if the student does not have
post GCSE/NVQ Level 2 or equivalent qualifications he/she may be asked
to provide a piece of written work of not more than 1000 words, as evidence
of ability to undertake the course.
Teaching Staff:
Dr Gill Parkinson and Mr Bev McCracken. Other lecturers and specialists
in their field provide seminars at workshops.
Teaching Methods:
Distance learning reading materials, with support texts, video material,
telephone or on-site tutor support (by arrangement) and 2x 3 day workshops
per year.
Forms of Assessment:
One assignment of 750 - 1000 words associated with each of the 6 units
of study. There are no set examinations on this course.
Accreditation: Equivalent
to 120 credits at Level 1 of an Undergraduate Degree Programme. These
units may be used as accreditation of prior learning (APL) for entry into
the second year of an honours degree programme at a UK/EU University,
subject to approval by Admissions offices of the university concerned.
Course Fee: (2001-02)
£550 UK/EU per year. Overseas students contact the Programme Secretary
(Subject to slight increase Aug 2002)
Study Schools These will be held in November 2002 and February/March 2003
Bursaries: Individuals wishing to apply for a bursary should provide a
supporting letter with their application form.
