Themes
The work of this RTG focuses on the teaching,
learning and acquisition of language and languages across all communication
modes (written, spoken and computer-mediated) in a wide variety of educational
contexts. Language is learnt and acquired as a first, other or additional
language, by children (pre-school, primary, secondary) and adults. Teaching
and learning takes place in and out of classrooms, in homes and via CMC,
in the UK and internationally.
Research
Research for this group arises from the themes above and covers diverse
topics in the areas of teacher education and language study:
- development and evaluation of teaching and learning
frameworks
- language and literacy across the curriculum
- language study
- language analysis
- assessment
- gender and achievement
- distributed and distance learning
- use and evaluation of new technologies
- intercultural communication and cultural studies
Teaching
Teaching for this group arises from the themes above and aims to promote
flexibility, innovation and quality of provision:
- takes place across the full range of levels (undergraduate,
graduate and postgraduate)
- promotes access and flexibility through alternative
modes of delivery such as distance courses, in-country courses, open
learning and summer courses
- promotes innovation in teaching through technologically-mediated
delivery
- promotes dissemination of good practice through presentations,
publications and partnerships with other institutions in the UK and
overseas
- promotes good practice and innovation in assessment
RTG staff
Will aim to initiate and carry out high quality
research grounded in, influencing and contributing to practice in areas
outlined above and this will entail :
- attracting high quality research students
- aiming to attract research grants from research councils,
government bodies, local authorities, and charitable foundations
- publishing in high quality (peer-reviewed) academic
journals, in professional journals and in book form
- presenting research at conferences both national
and international
- organising and teaching a range of high quality courses
at undergraduate, masters and doctoral level, the content of which is
informed, in part, by the research base
- working with schools, local authorities, government
and non-government organisations which share the research and teaching
agenda.
The team will aim to achieve this through collaboration
and mutual consultation in the initiation and pursuit of research, by assisting
colleagues in developing their research activities, and supporting each
others’ endeavours through research training, study leave and publication.
