Language and Literacy Studies

Gary Motteram
Chair of the Curriculum Development Team for ELT

Gary has worked for the Faculty of Education since 1984, when he joined it to work on courses for Saudi Arabian teacher trainees. Since then he has set up two Masters degree programmes concerned with Educational Technology and ELT, one which is taught on-site at Manchester and the other which is available by distance. He has been a long time member of IATEFL and was co-ordinator of the special interest group for computers and its newsletter editor for a number of years.

His research interests are in the areas of computers in language classrooms and online teacher education. He supervises research students and manages projects in both of these areas.

2002
"Learners, teachers and the web: a small-scale qualitative study into how learners learn online." (Forthcoming).

2001
"The role of synchronous communication in fully distance education." The issue of whether distance education can fulfil the needs of learners has been much discussed in the literature. It is generally felt that there are two key facets to an educational context which are vital to the process of education, one is the building of a community within a group and a second is the deep understanding of ideas and issues that are presented as part of a course. This paper shows how both these aspects of learning can be facilitated through a number of different online tools in the context of fully distance Masters education. It argues further that synchronous tools are more effective for the 'social' side of education and that asynchronous tools are better at dealing with the 'academic' aspects of the course.

"'Deep' learning and computer mediated communication: a case study of on-line teacher education." A recent paper on the research that is being undertaken at Manchester University on the impacts of online distance education. Given originally at the 2nd Network Learning Conference.

IATEFL's Computer SIG Virtual Pre-Conference Event. IATEFL's first attempt at on online event. Part of the lead up to this year's Dublin Conference.

1999
"Ten years of teacher education with ICT." A paper presented at the British Educational Research Association Conference in 1999.

"The crafting of effective distance BA materials". A Working paper originally presented at the BA in ELT Conference at the British Council, Mexico, 1999.

"Changing the research paradigm: qualitative research methodology and the CALL classroom." Originally given as a paper at the first WordCALL Conference and then published in: Debski, R. and Levy. M. (1999). WorldCALL. Amsterdam: Swets & Zeitlinger.
