Management and Leisure

Background
The 3 year undergraduate course has been running since 1992. It is located in Management and Institutional Development within the Faculty of Education. The Faculty has an established tradition in supporting academic degrees providing professional training and also carrying out research in this area. High teaching standards and innovative curriculum developments are also a hallmark of the Faculty and the course has been praised by external bodies for its strengths in these areas and is accredited with the Institute of Leisure and Amenity Management.

Focus of the course.
Academic study is combined with professional training and experience. The course is focused on management and management skills in the leisure sector and also offers students an opportunity to gain an understanding of the nature and scope of the phenomenon of leisure and the operation and development of the leisure sector. Leisure is considered in its full breadth and includes the arts, tourism, sport, entertainment and outdoor recreation; there is no sector bias nor sector specialisation in the first two years.

Design of the Degree
The first year concentrates on the disciplines which have informed the development of knowledge in leisure and management sciences. Sociology, Historical framework; Psychology; Economics; Marketing, Research and Law are all studied and there is a one semester skills course to support students in their learning, I.T and Communication skills.

Year 2 builds on the first and the focus shifts to management skills and knowledge in the context of the leisure sector. Human Resource Management; Leisure Law II; Marketing; International Dimensions; Financial Management; Leisure in Contemporary Society; Research Methods II and Career Management are all studied.

Year 3 develops Management and Marketing and Promotion and two options can be chosen from:

Arts and Entertainment; Tourism; Sport and Recreation; and Running Your Own Business.

The second semester is focused on the Applied Study Period and the associated Research Projects.

The Applied Study Period (ASP) takes place in each of the three years, in Year 1 it lasts 2 weeks; in Year 2 it increases to 4 weeks and in Year 3 it lasts 10 weeks. All such periods begin in January. It is an opportunity to relate the academic learning with workplace knowledge and skills. As the course progresses so it forms an increasing significance. The process of selecting a host organisation is assisted by the University Careers Service.

Assessment
The Assessment of work is evenly divided between traditional unseen time constrained Examinations and Assignments. A typical module, for example Psychology, requires students to write a 3,000 word assignment by a set date and sit a 3 hour examination, normally in early June. The class of the degree is based upon the marks in the second and third years. In the final year the ASP requires students to submit a 12,000 word research project and a 3,000 word report and presentation on the host agency; thus ASP related work contributes 25% to the final class of degree.
